The Sickle Cell 5K Race/Walk – Theme: Running for Warriors!

The Sickle Cell Foundation of Georgia, Inc. held  the 42nd Sickle Cell Race/Walk  September 10, 2022, in beautiful downtown East Point on a new 5K route. Even though it was raining, the kickoff started at 9AM.

The annual charity event benefits Camp New Hope, a weeklong summer camp for kids and teens living with sickle cell disease. It is through Camp New Hope that campers are able to enjoy an outdoor enriching adventure while learning self-help sickle cell management skills and positive image development in a medically supervised environment.

The race got off to a wet start, as it was raining on the day of the event. That didn’t stop the faithful who came out to support The Sickle Cell Foundation of Georgia. Young people, older people, kids, sororities and fraternities, business owners and families could be seen running, marching or walking the route.

As the participants crossed the finish line they were cheered on by the waiting crowd with much fan-fair, music and metal.

The annual sickle cell road race/walk was launched over four decades ago in conjunction with the South Fulton Running Partners, Inc. — one of the nation’s premier African American track clubs.
